Snap on dentures, also known as implant-supported dentures, offer a revolutionary solution for individuals seeking a secure, natural-looking, and comfortable alternative to traditional dentures. Unlike conventional dentures that rely on adhesives to stay in place, snap on dentures use dental implants as anchors, providing a stable and secure fit. This innovative approach not only enhances the functionality and aesthetics of dentures but also significantly improves the wearer’s confidence and quality of life.
The process of getting snap on dentures involves several steps, each crucial to ensuring the final result is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Here’s a detailed look at the procedure:
The journey begins with a comprehensive dental examination. During this visit, the dentist will evaluate your oral health, take X-rays, and possibly CT scans to assess the condition of your jawbone and determine the best placement for the implants. This assessment is crucial to planning the procedure effectively.
After the initial assessment, a customized treatment plan is created. This plan will outline the number of implants needed, the type of dentures to be used, and the overall timeline of the procedure. The dentist will also discuss any necessary preparatory treatments, such as bone grafting, which may be required to ensure there is enough bone to support the implants.
The next step involves surgically placing the dental implants into the jawbone. This is usually done under local anesthesia, although sedation options are available for patients who are anxious or require extensive work. The implants, typically made of titanium, are inserted into the bone, where they will eventually fuse through a process called osseointegration. This process can take several months, during which temporary dentures may be provided.
During the healing period, the implants integrate with the jawbone, creating a stable foundation for the dentures. Regular follow-up visits are necessary to monitor the progress and ensure proper healing. This phase is critical for the long-term success of snap on dentures.
Once the implants have fully integrated, abutments (connectors) are attached to the implants. These abutments protrude slightly above the gum line and will serve as the attachment points for the dentures.
Custom dentures are then fabricated based on impressions of your mouth. These dentures are designed to snap onto the abutments securely. During the fitting process, adjustments are made to ensure a comfortable and precise fit. The dentures should snap on easily and remain securely in place during daily activities such as eating and speaking.
After the final fitting, your dentist will provide instructions on how to care for your snap on dentures. Regular dental visits are essential to ensure the longevity and functionality of the dentures. Adjustments may be necessary over time to accommodate changes in the mouth and ensure optimal comfort.
Snap on dentures offer numerous advantages over traditional dentures, making them an increasingly popular choice for those seeking a more reliable and comfortable solution.
One of the most significant benefits of snap on dentures is their stability. Unlike conventional dentures that can slip or shift, snap on dentures are anchored securely to dental implants, providing a stable and secure fit. This stability enhances the wearer’s ability to eat, speak, and laugh confidently without fear of the dentures moving out of place.
The secure fit of snap on dentures reduces the risk of sore spots and irritation commonly associated with traditional dentures. The dentures do not rest directly on the gums, minimizing pressure and discomfort.
With snap on dentures, chewing and biting forces are distributed more evenly, allowing for a more natural and efficient chewing experience. This enables individuals to enjoy a wider variety of foods, improving overall nutrition and health.
Snap on dentures are designed to look natural and complement the wearer’s facial features. The customized fit and secure attachment create a seamless and attractive smile, boosting the wearer’s confidence and self-esteem.
Dental implants help preserve the jawbone by stimulating bone tissue, which can prevent bone loss that often occurs with missing teeth. This preservation of bone structure maintains the integrity of the facial profile and contributes to long-term oral health.
Snap on dentures are an excellent option for many individuals, but certain factors must be considered to determine if they are the right choice for you.
Adequate bone density in the jaw is necessary to support the implants. Bone grafting may be required for individuals with insufficient bone.
Candidates should be in good overall health, as certain medical conditions can affect the healing process and success of the implants.
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is essential to prevent infections and ensure the longevity of the implants and dentures.
Smoking can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of implant failure. Non-smokers are generally better candidates for snap on dentures.
The cost of snap on dentures can vary widely based on several factors, including the complexity of the case, the number of implants required, and the geographical location of the dental practice. Here are some cost factors to consider:
The initial consultation, which includes a comprehensive dental examination, X-rays, and possibly CT scans, will incur some costs. These diagnostic tools are necessary for accurate treatment planning.
The surgical placement of the implants is a significant part of the overall cost. The number of implants required will directly impact the total expense. Additional procedures, such as bone grafting, can also add to the cost.
Custom-fabricated dentures are designed to fit precisely and look natural. The materials used and the complexity of the design can influence the cost.
Post-surgery follow-up visits and any necessary adjustments to the dentures are part of the overall treatment plan. Regular maintenance is crucial to ensuring the longevity of the snap on dentures.
While some dental insurance plans may cover part of the cost, it’s essential to check with your provider to understand what is covered and what out-of-pocket expenses to expect. Financing options and payment plans may also be available through your dental practice.

The implants that get installed for snap-on dentures will typically last throughout your entire lifetime. It's possible that your overdenture might need to be replaced after a number of years, although many patients feel very comfortable never having them replaced at all.
Snap-on dentures might use two to four dental implants, and they actually get snapped into place on those implants. Permanent dentures or All-on-4 implants will generally use between four and six implants to create permanent dentures, and these cannot be taken out for cleaning.
