CEREC Technology Brings You Same Day Crowns
In the ever-evolving field of dentistry, advancements in technology continually enhance patient care and treatment outcomes. One such breakthrough is CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) technology, which revolutionizes the process of creating dental crowns. Unlike traditional methods that require multiple visits and temporary crowns, CEREC allows for the fabrication and placement of high-quality, custom-made crowns in just one appointment. This blog delves into the numerous benefits of CEREC technology, illustrating how it not only saves time but also ensures precision, comfort, and long-lasting results, ultimately transforming the patient experience in restorative dentistry.
How it Works
- Digital Impression: Instead of traditional messy molds, Dr. Shahbazyan uses a scanner to take 3D digital images of your teeth.
- Design: Dr. Shahbazyan uses special software to design the crown based on the digital images.
- Milling: The design is sent to an in-office milling machine, which carves the crown from a block of ceramic material.
- Placement: Once milled, Dr. Shahbazyan bonds the custom-made crown directly to your tooth in the same appointment.
Benefits of same-day crowns
- Saves time: The entire process is completed in a single visit, which typically takes about 1-2 hours, freeing you from multiple appointments.
- No temporary crown: You leave the dental office with a permanent, custom-made crown, avoiding the discomfort and potential issues of a temporary crown.
- Metal-free: CEREC crowns are made from ceramic, which can be a good option for patients with metal sensitivities.
- Precise fit: The digital imaging and milling process ensures a precise fit, which can help preserve more of your natural tooth structure.

What are Dental Crowns?
Am I a Candidate for Dental Crowns?
- Have a broken, chipped, or severely worn tooth
- Have undergone a root canal treatment
- Need to cover a discolored or misshapen tooth
- Want to secure a dental bridge or cap a dental implant
- Have a large cavity that can’t be repaired with a filling
Dr. Shahbazyan will evaluate your tooth structure, oral health, and aesthetic concerns during your consultation to determine if a crown is the right solution for you.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
- Restored Tooth Strength: Dental crowns reinforce weakened or damaged teeth, allowing you to chew, bite, and speak without discomfort or worry.
- Natural Aesthetics: Crowns are custom-crafted to match the color, shape, and contour of your natural teeth for a flawless, seamless smile.
- Long-Lasting Durability: Made from high-quality materials, crowns can withstand daily wear and last 10–15 years or more with proper care.
- Protection from Further Damage: A crown encases the entire tooth, shielding it from decay, fractures, and further deterioration caused by pressure or bacteria.
- Improved Confidence: Crowns help you smile, eat, and speak with renewed self-assurance by restoring your tooth’s appearance and function.
Types of Crowns
There are quite a few types of dental crowns which you might choose to have installed, and the type you choose will depend on how important certain features are to you. Here’s a closer look at the options:
Porcelain Crowns (All-Ceramic)
Porcelain crowns are our top recommendation for most patients, especially for front teeth. They offer the most natural appearance, with a translucency and color that mimics real enamel. Dr. Shahbazyan personally selects high-quality porcelain for its superior cosmetic appeal, ensuring your crown blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.
Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia is a strong, biocompatible ceramic that combines durability with aesthetics. It’s an excellent option for back teeth that endure more biting pressure while maintaining a natural appearance.
Metal Crowns
Crowns made of metals like gold, palladium, nickel, or chromium are incredibly strong and resistant to wear. They rarely chip or break, making them ideal for molars. However, due to their metallic color, they’re typically used on teeth that are not visible when smiling.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns
All-Resin Crowns
These are a more affordable option and can be used for temporary or transitional crowns. However, resin crowns are less durable than other materials and more prone to chipping or wear.

What Steps Are Involved in Preparing a Tooth for a Crown?
- When you visit your dentist for the first time in preparation for a crown, the tooth will be examined and x-rayed, and the bone around the tooth will also be examined.
- Your dentist will ensure that there is no tooth decay or damage to the tooth pulp, which would necessitate performing a root canal prior to the crown procedure.
- The tooth that will receive the crown would then be filed down on the sides and on the top so the crown can be properly placed.
- We will take an impression of your tooth and have our computerized system design your new crown so that it will be a perfect fit in your mouth.
- Our CEREC machine will create a high-quality porcelain crown while you wait, so you won’t have to return for a second visit.
- When the crown is ready, we will install it in your mouth, ensuring that your new crown fits properly. If necessary, we will adjust the crown so that it feels comfortable in your mouth and you have a proper bite.

Our Technology
CEREC Technology allows us to provide our patients with Same Day Restorations.
No more messy impression materials or hassle with annoying temporaries! CAD/CAM Technology allows our patients to have a beautiful restoration designed, fabricated and delivered in a single appointment! Here’s how:
Using CEREC Technology, we can take a photo scan of your tooth with a special laser camera that safely captures the anatomy of the prepared tooth and renders it as a 3-dimensional image.
We then customize your crown, inlay or onlay using your digital “impression” and 3D imaging software while you relax with a magazine or music headphones.
After the doctor approves the final design, the CEREC milling system employs CAD/CAM technology to shape your restoration from a high-strength, metal-free ceramic or composite block in a shade to match your smile. This eliminates the repeat visit after sending the impression off to a lab, as this can now be done right in the office while you are in the chair!

FAQs
How long does it take to get a dental crown?
The process typically requires two visits: one for preparation and impressions, and another for final placement, usually within 1–2 weeks.
Does getting a dental crown hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so it’s comfortable. You may feel minor sensitivity after placement, which resolves quickly.
Are dental crowns permanent?
While not permanent, crowns are long-lasting restorations. With good care, they often last 10–15 years or more.
Can I get a crown on the same day?
We currently work with trusted dental labs for custom fabrication. This allows us to achieve the best fit and appearance, even if it takes an extra appointment.
What should I do if my dental crown feels loose or falls off?
If your crown becomes loose or dislodged, contact our office immediately. Avoid chewing on that side and keep the area clean until you can be seen. In most cases, we can re-cement or replace the crown promptly.
Can I get a crown if I have gum disease?
Treating gum disease is a priority before placing a crown. Once your gums are healthy, a crown can be safely and successfully placed.
