Who Is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most adults with one or more missing teeth can be candidates for dental implants, but a few factors determine eligibility:

Healthy Gums & Jawbone – Adequate bone density is necessary for implant support. Bone grafting may be an option for those with insufficient bone.

No Severe Medical Conditions – Conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking may affect healing.

Commitment to Oral Hygiene – Proper dental care ensures the longevity of your implants.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are widely recognized as the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. They are engineered to function like natural teeth and are supported by decades of research, clinical trials, and best-practice guidelines in dentistry. Dental Implants have 3 main components:

Implant Fixture (Implant Body)

The fixture is a screw-like post, typically made from titanium or titanium alloys. Surgically placed into the jawbone, the fixture acts as the root of the artificial tooth. Its stability is critical to the overall success of the implant system.

Abutment
The abutment is the connector that attaches directly to the implant fixture. Serving as an intermediary, the abutment supports the prosthetic crown and ensures a secure and precise connection between the implant and the visible restoration.

Prosthetic Crown (Artificial Tooth)
The crown is the visible component that replicates the appearance and function of a natural tooth. Beyond aesthetics, the crown restores normal chewing function and speech. Its design is based on rigorous protocols that ensure both durability and natural appearance.

Single Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or can be used as a support to replace multiple teeth.

Single Tooth Implants

For patients missing a single tooth, a single-tooth implant is the best solution. It consists of a titanium post that replaces the root of the missing tooth and a custom crown that mimics the appearance of a natural tooth.

All-on-4 Dental Implants

The All-on-4 dental implant system is an advanced solution for patients missing most or all of their teeth. This technique involves placing four implants in strategic positions to support a full arch of replacement teeth. It is a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional dentures, offering greater stability and a natural appearance.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Choosing dental implants over other tooth replacement options offers numerous advantages:

  • Permanent & Long-Lasting

Unlike dentures, which may need replacement every few years, dental implants can last a lifetime with proper care.

  • Natural Appearance & Functionality

Dental implants look, feel, and function just like natural teeth, giving you a seamless and confident smile.

  • Prevents Bone Loss

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone begins to deteriorate. Dental implants stimulate bone growth, preserving facial structure and preventing sunken cheeks.

  • Improved Speech & Chewing

Since they are securely anchored, dental implants eliminate the discomfort of loose dentures, making it easier to eat and speak clearly.

  • No Damage to Adjacent Teeth

Unlike dental bridges, implants don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support, preserving their health.

Dental Implant Procedure

There are several steps involved in getting dental implants. This process requires commitment because it can take a minimum of several months and up to a year or more, depending on how long healing takes between steps.

Initial Evaluation

Your journey begins with a thorough evaluation. During this first visit, Dr. Shahbazyan examines your oral health, takes detailed x-rays, and discusses your dental history, needs, and treatment goals. This comprehensive assessment allows us to determine if dental implants are the right solution and whether any additional procedures are required.

Our knowledgeable office staff also contacts your insurance provider to explore coverage options. While many insurance plans may offer limited implant coverage, we are committed to helping you access affordable care through flexible financing options, including our In-House Dental Savings Plan.

Mouth Preparation Procedures

For many patients, additional preparatory procedures are essential before implant placement. These may include:

  • Tooth Extraction
In cases where teeth are severely decayed or damaged, extraction becomes necessary. We make every effort to preserve natural teeth; however, when extraction is in your best interest, our team ensures a gentle and precise procedure.
  • Bone Grafting and Sinus Lift
If you’ve been missing teeth for some time, your jawbone may have lost density—a critical factor for implant stability. Through bone grafting, we rebuild the necessary foundation using either your own bone or a high-quality synthetic alternative. In situations where implants are planned for the upper jaw, a sinus lift may be performed to create the proper space for the graft, further enhancing implant success.

Inserting the Dental Implant

Once your mouth is adequately prepared and healed, the implant placement procedure begins. This involves:

  • Making a small, precise incision in the gum to expose the jawbone.
  • Drilling a carefully planned hole in the bone to accommodate the implant.

For patients who only require extractions, it might be possible to place the implant on the same day. However, most cases benefit from a staged approach to ensure optimal stability and long-term success.

During the healing phase, a process called osseointegration occurs, whereby the jawbone naturally fuses with the implant. This critical period can span several months, and maintaining a liquid or soft food diet is essential to prevent any movement of the implant.

Abutment Placement

Once osseointegration confirms that the implant is securely anchored, an abutment is attached. This small connector serves as the foundation for the final restoration:

  • A temporary crown or healing cap may be used initially to preserve the gum shape and ensure comfort.
  • The abutment effectively bridges the implant with the final dental crown, ensuring both function and aesthetics.

Adding the Permanent Crown

After the abutment is in place and the gums have healed:

  • A custom-made permanent crown is crafted to perfectly match your natural teeth in color, shape, and function.
  • In a subsequent appointment, the temporary restoration is removed, the fit of the permanent crown is carefully evaluated, and then it is cemented into place.

The end result is a natural-looking, fully functional smile that restores both your oral health and self-confidence.

Dental Implant Aftercare

Proper care following your dental implant procedure is critical to ensure a smooth and successful recovery. Our detailed aftercare instructions include:

  • Immediate Post-Procedure: A liquid diet is recommended for the first two weeks to minimize any stress on the implant site.
  • Transition to Soft Foods: Gradually reintroduce soft foods as healing progresses, avoiding hard or chewy items that could dislodge the implant.
  • Long-Term Care: Once full healing is confirmed, you can return to your regular diet. We encourage routine follow-ups to monitor the implant’s integration and maintain your overall oral health.

Our commitment to excellence means we’re with you every step of the way—from your initial consultation through the final restoration—ensuring that you receive not only the highest standard of care but also the personalized attention you deserve.

Dental Implant Before & After

How Much Does Dental Implants Cost?

The cost of dental implants can vary based on several factors, including:

  • The number of implants needed
  • Type of implant and material used
  • Additional procedures like bone grafting or sinus lifts
  • Geographic location and clinic expertise

The average cost of a single dental implant can range between $3,000 to $5,000, including surgery, abutment, and crown. While implants may seem costly upfront, they are a long-term investment in oral health, reducing future dental expenses linked to missing teeth and bone loss.

At Shahbazyan Dental Studio, we offer flexible payment plans and financing options to help make dental implants more accessible.
