What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable prosthetic devices designed to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They restore essential functions like chewing and speaking while supporting facial structure to prevent a sunken appearance. Modern dentures are custom-crafted for a comfortable fit and natural look, and they can replace a full arch of teeth (complete dentures) or just a few missing teeth (partial dentures). For enhanced stability, implant-supported dentures anchor securely to dental implants, offering a permanent, confident solution.

Our Denture Services in Fresno, CA

We offer a full spectrum of denture solutions to meet the unique needs, preferences, and budgets of every patient. From traditional to state-of-the-art implant-supported options, we guide you to the best choice for your oral health and lifestyle.

1. Full Dentures

Full dentures, or complete dentures, are designed to replace all the teeth in an arch (upper, lower, or both). They rest directly on the gums and are custom-made to mimic the look of natural teeth and gums, providing both aesthetic and functional restoration.

The Process & Experience:

Crafting a successful full denture is an art that requires precision and patience. The process begins after any remaining teeth have been extracted and the gums have healed. We take a series of meticulous impressions and measurements of your jaws, noting their relationship and the space available. You’ll be involved in selecting the tooth shape, size, and color to ensure a natural, age-appropriate appearance. We then create a wax try-in model for you to “test drive” the denture’s fit, look, and speech before the final product is processed. This step is crucial for ensuring comfort and satisfaction.

Benefits:

  • Restored Facial Contour: Supports lips and cheeks, preventing a sunken appearance.
  • Regained Function: Enables you to chew a wider variety of foods.
  • Aesthetic Renewal: Replaces a full smile with natural-looking teeth.
  • Non-Invasive: A surgical alternative for those not seeking implants.

2. Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base, which is connected by a metal or flexible acrylic framework that clasps onto your healthy teeth.

The Process & Experience:

We design partial dentures to be precise, functional, and discreet. After evaluating your remaining teeth, we take detailed impressions to create a partial that fits securely without putting undue stress on your natural teeth. The clasps are carefully designed for both retention and minimal visibility. Like full dentures, you’ll have a try-in appointment to approve the fit and aesthetics.

Benefits:

  • Tooth Preservation: Prevents remaining teeth from shifting into empty spaces.
  • Removable Convenience: Easy to take out for cleaning.
  • Cost-Effective: A more affordable alternative to multiple bridges or implants.
  • Customizable: Available with metal or lightweight, flexible acrylic frameworks for comfort.

3. Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures represent a revolutionary advance in tooth replacement. Unlike traditional dentures that rest on the gums, these prosthetics securely attach to dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone. This connection provides unmatched stability, preventing slipping, clicking, or bone loss.

Types We Offer:

  • Implant-Retained (Snap-On) Dentures: The denture “snaps” onto 2-4 implants per arch. It is removable by the patient for easy cleaning but offers tremendous stability during function.
  • Fixed Hybrid Dentures (All-on-4®): A full arch of teeth is permanently fixed onto 4 or more strategically placed implants. This solution is not removable by the patient and feels the closest to natural teeth.

The Process & Experience:

This is a two-phase treatment. First, Dr. Shahbazyan, a Fellow of the International Dental Implant Association, surgically places the implants. After a healing period where the implants fuse with the bone, we attach your custom-crafted denture. The result is a restoration that allows you to eat, speak, and smile with absolute confidence.

Benefits:

  • Unparalleled Stability: No adhesives needed; dentures stay firmly in place.
  • Bone Preservation: Implants stimulate the jawbone, halting deterioration.
  • Enhanced Function: Restores nearly 100% of natural chewing power.
  • Long-Term Solution: Implants are designed to last a lifetime with proper care.

You may be an ideal candidate for dentures if:

  • You struggle with loose, uncomfortable, or outdated existing dentures.
  • You seek a non-surgical or surgical (implant) tooth replacement option.

FAQs

How long does it take to get used to new dentures?
There is an adjustment period, typically 2-4 weeks, as your mouth muscles learn to hold the dentures in place. Speech and eating will improve with practice. We provide follow-up appointments for adjustments.
It is generally recommended to remove dentures at night. This allows your gum tissues to rest and promotes better oral hygiene, reducing the risk of infection and extending the life of your dentures.
Care involves daily brushing with a soft denture brush and non-abrasive cleaner, soaking them in a cleansing solution overnight, and handling them over a soft surface to prevent damage if dropped.
Immediate dentures are placed on the same day your teeth are extracted. They serve as a temporary prosthesis during the healing period, which can take several months. After healing, they will need a permanent reline or replacement.
Dentures typically last 5-8 years. Over time, bone and gum ridges change shape (resorb), causing dentures to become loose. Regular check-ups allow us to monitor fit and recommend relining or replacement when needed.
